What is Back Pain?

Back pain refers to discomfort or pain felt anywhere along the spine, from the neck down to the lower back. It can vary in intensity, duration, and location. Back pain can be caused by a myriad of factors, including muscle strain, ligament sprains, herniated discs, spinal abnormalities, poor posture, or underlying medical conditions. Common symptoms include aching, stiffness, sharp pain, or limited mobility. Treatment for back pain often involves a combination of rest, physical therapy, pain management strategies, and, in some cases, surgical interventions. Identifying the specific cause of back pain is crucial in developing an effective treatment plan tailored to an individual's needs.

Types of Low Back Pain

Non-Specific Low Back Pain

Non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) is a common musculoskeletal condition characterized by pain and discomfort in the lower region of the spine, typically between the ribcage and the pelvis. Unlike specific causes of back pain, such as a herniated disc or spinal injury, NSLBP lacks a clearly identifiable underlying pathology. Instead, it is often attributed to a combination of factors, including muscle strain, ligamentous injury, poor posture, and degenerative changes in the spine.

NSLBP is a prevalent health issue globally, affecting people of all ages and backgrounds. The pain associated with NSLBP can range from mild to severe and may be intermittent or chronic. Individuals with NSLBP often experience limitations in their daily activities and a decreased quality of life.

Nerve Root Pain

Nerve root back pain refers to a type of back pain caused by irritation or compression of the spinal nerve roots. The spinal nerve roots are the points where nerves branch out from the spinal cord and extend to various parts of the body. When these nerve roots are affected, it can result in localized or radiating pain, often accompanied by other sensory or motor symptoms.

Conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or degenerative changes in the spine can lead to compression or irritation of the nerve roots, triggering nerve root back pain. The pain may be sharp, shooting, or burning, and it typically follows the path of the affected nerve, often radiating into the buttocks, legs, or feet. Other symptoms may include numbness, tingling, or weakness in the corresponding areas served by the affected nerves.

Spinal Osteoarthritis

Spinal osteoarthritis, also known as spondylosis or degenerative joint disease of the spine, is a form of osteoarthritis that affects the joints and discs in the spine. It is a common age-related condition where the cartilage that cushions the joints and discs gradually breaks down over time, leading to various symptoms and structural changes in the spine.

As spinal osteoarthritis progresses, it may result in the formation of bone spurs (osteophytes) and the thickening of ligaments in the spine. These changes can contribute to stiffness, reduced flexibility, and pain in the affected areas of the spine. The condition commonly affects the cervical (neck) and lumbar (lower back) regions of the spine.

Symptoms of spinal osteoarthritis may include localized pain, stiffness, and discomfort, which can be exacerbated by movement or prolonged periods of inactivity. In some cases, spinal nerve roots may be compressed, leading to additional symptoms such as radiating pain, numbness, or weakness in the arms or legs.

"I went there approximately 3 weeks ago to see Doctor P. I had pain in my lower back for about a month and it wasn’t getting any better. Doctor P fixed it. No pills, no surgery, no nonsense. I highly recommend seeing him if you have any need for chiropractic care. I’ll definitely make another appointment to start working on fixing my posture. Thank you!"

"Dr Tony is very knowledgeable and listens to his patients. My daughter had a severe migraine that lasted for weeks. Dr Tony is the only doctor to look at her spine. She was diagnosed with scoliosis and had vast improvement after 6 weeks of seeing Dr Tony 3x a week. It was gone after 8 wks. Thank you Dr Tony!"
